For those on a tight budget, Resumes Planet offers a pretty compelling price structure; for less than a
hundred bucks, get a resume built from scratch. If all you need is editing of an existing resume, the price
drops even further to $74.95. A bargain? Well, not so fast.
The problem is writing quality – the down side of most budget resumes. In the case of ResumesPlanet, $94.95 (the
cost to a mid-level professional) isn't going to buy the same quality of workmanship as say, the $199.95 resume
over at ResumeWriters.com or the $245.00 resume at GreatResumesFast.com, two companies in particular that garnered our 5-star rating.
That is, if the resume samples posted at the Planet's website are any indication. There are other issues, as
well (see what we didn't like,
below)...
How It Works:
Navigate to the category that best fits your work history: entry level, professional, career change, executive,
military or federal. Decide if you want to include a cover letter (also reasonably priced). Or buy the full package
(resume, cover letter, thank you and follow-up letters). Fill in their order form, and send in your career
information. They will ask you to upload your current resume, if you have one.
You can communicate with your assigned writer either via phone or messaging system. You'll receive your finished
resume within 72 hours in four formats: WORD, electronic, scannable and web.
The company guarantees your satisfaction - and at least one interview. If you need to make an immediate change
or correction to the resume, message your writer and it will usually be taken care of in a matter of hours.
Then, at the end of 30 days if you haven't received an interview invitation, you can request a re-write of the
resume.
Here's What We Liked:
-
With 200+ writers in their network, they claim to be able to assign you to a writer who best
matches your profession or discipline.
- Pricing was upfront and reasonable.
- Four distribution formats. Receive your resume in Microsoft Word, electronic, scannable and web
formats.
- An interview is guaranteed.
Here's What We Didn't Like:
- While all writers are claimed to be members of an industry association (Professional Association of Resume
Writers), not all writers hold industry certification.
- A detailed, one-on-one telephone interview is not in the cards. Instead, the writer gathers the necessary
information via the online form you fill out, and your uploaded resume. Yes, you can communicate with your
writer via phone and messaging, but a full-blown interview is not modus operandi. (Hint: we have a bias toward
telephone interviews).
- Resume samples posted on the company website indicate problems--from design and formatting issues to a lack
of command of the English language.
- Finally, the Better Business Bureau is not impressed with the parent company. They give that parent,
operating as Universal Research LLC, a rating of "F."
Summary:
For the budget conscious, you can supposedly get a professional resume for less than a hundred bucks.
That's the good news. The bad news is that the writing quality will not keep you competitive in the
marketplace. And buyer beware: the number of complaints filed against this company's parent, and the
lack of response to those complaints, have generated an F rating from the Better Business Bureau.
If you've got a few more bucks to spare, consider the $149 resume over at ResumeCorner.com. It's a significant leap ahead in writing quality, and all the writers are
certified. Better still, the $199.95 resume over at ResumeWriters.com. This company
has top-notch certified writers and very attentive customer service -- and our highest rating. Read our
in-depth reviews of each of these two companies, respectively, HERE and HERE.
